A House Tour: Helen's Cottage

My long time friend over at Homeslice posted this house tour a few days ago, reminding me of how impressed I was with the cottage when I first saw it posted on The Names Agency. Though I must agree with Jenna that the home isn't entirely my cup of tea in the sense of its' livability, I do appreciate the thought in the architectural details (beams, posts, and use of space), creativity in the placement of the art, delightful mix of modern and rustic, and the killer marble island. Plus, it has real wood floors. I long for real wood floors.

It even makes ceiling fans look good. Why do I have a stink eye when it comes to ceiling fans?

And hey, and here's a well-deserved treat for you - a cover by The Civil Wars of a familiar song. They got theatrics.

Clever, Comfortable and Industrial

Found in the archives of Sacramento Street comes a living room and kitchen designed by Beth Martin, Sara Story, Grant K. Gibson and Aurelien Gallent for Elle Decor's Modern Life Concept House. It's a shame I found this because now I will be accountable when I copy every. single. thing. in this place. The dark walls, copious amounts to texture, clean lines, masculine furnishings, and use of art are all worthy of a sigh. They took ALL the good ideas.

I like the contrast between the feminine, light rug from the rest of the industrial, rigid decor.

Don't forget about using art in a space. Use it to further the concept and complete the look.

Pages from take out menus are used as the backsplash in the kitchen. Would this be an idea you would use? What would you choose to display? newspapers? old letters? recipes?

I wish I had never found this. I'm smitten.

Blackened Spaces

It would have to be in a room with large windows
with really cool floors
with natural materials in use
with light furniture - both in reference to color and visual weight
with some semblance of nature in sight
and in a space I don't spend that much time in
maybe even with a fireplace

With all of those things in mind, I will consider having black walls in my home. The trend has not yet died for me.

Why does this work?

• While we're often advised to lighten up rooms, a darker paint color can be a bold statement to simplify the space. It can also be a serene addition. It just depends on the feel you want the room to have
• Contrast the darkness with other light colors and natural light, be it on furniture, fabrics, or trim color
• Black walls can be a great backdrop to a more important focal point
• Play with the finish of the paint - glossy, eggshell or flat - they each have their own look
